Morgan Massie Presents: Leading and Managing with Effective Conversations

Leading and managing today requires more than strong processes and policies—it requires leaders who know how to engage people through effective conversations.

This session is designed for HR professionals who support strategic and operational leaders and want to help them rebalance how leadership shows up in the day-to-day. Drawing from the best-selling book and model, The Five Coaching Conversations, the program focuses on two foundational leadership conversations: Explain and Explore.

Participants will examine how leaders often default to explaining—setting direction, clarifying expectations, reinforcing process—while underutilizing exploration, which creates space for understanding, listening, and shared problem-solving. When leaders over-index on process at the expense of people, engagement and trust can erode, even when intentions are good.

This session provides HR professionals with a practical framework and language they can use to coach leaders toward more balanced, intentional conversations that support both performance and people. The emphasis is on real-world application—conversations leaders can have in the flow of work, without adding complexity or time burden.

Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between Explain and Explore conversations and understand the role each plays in effective leadership
  • Recognize common conversation patterns where leaders prioritize process over people, and the impact this has on engagement and outcomes
  • Coach leaders to strengthen exploration skills, including curiosity, listening, and inquiry
  • Support leaders in setting clearer expectations while also creating space for employee voice and perspective
  • Apply a practical conversation framework that HR professionals can use in leadership coaching, development, and consultation

This program has been pre-approved for 1.5 HR General credits toward aPHR®, aPHRi™, PHR®, PHRca®, SPHR®, GPHR®, PHRi™ and SPHRi™ recertification through HR Certification Institute® (HRCI®).
